Tour the sights and sounds of the luxurious Sea Island resort off the Georgia coast
SEA ISLAND, Ga. -- Sea Island can match -- or surpass -- many of the best golf resorts in America, if not the world.
The luxurious retreat, located off the southeastern coast of Georgia, halfway between Savannah and Jacksonville, Fla., might not have four highly ranked resort courses such as the American Club in Wisconsin or Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon, but its Seaside Course does something those resorts do not -- host an annual PGA Tour event.
Its other resort courses -- Plantation Course and Retreat Course -- feature traditional, scenic Lowcountry golf around marshes and ponds.
Sea Island might not have the major championship venue such as the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort or the Pebble Beach Golf Links at Pebble Beach Resorts, but in terms of five-star accommodations, the Lodge at Sea Island and The Cloister Hotel can stand against both.
Sea Island's posh and relaxing men's locker room and its incredible golf academy right on the ocean -- coupled with an award-winning staff and its spa facilities -- are, perhaps, its biggest strength. The Golf Academy helps everybody from pros (more than 20 live on the island) to high handicappers improve. As expected, the resort's dining and service are first class. The bagpipes at sundown outside the Lodge remind guests just how lucky they are to stay in such a beautiful place.
