The Golden Isles, actually a series of barrier islands off Georgia's southeast coast, feature a price level that makes them affordable for all. Jekyll Island is the moderately priced alternative that many families choose. St. Simons Island is a step up in style and Sea Island sets the standard for opulence and luxury.
Jekyll Island has 10 miles of beaches and an 11-acre water park for those who want a little more action. There are hotels available, but many visitors choose to rent one of the condominiums or homes on the island. There is a miniature golf course and people often enjoy renting a bicycle and exploring the 20 miles of paved trails. Golfers at Jekyll can choose from three 18-hole layouts (Oleander, Pine Lakes and Indian Mound) or the historic nine-hole Great Dunes, the remains of the original course which was built a century ago.
St. Simons Island is the largest of the Golden Isles and was founded by the English to raise rice and cotton. It is currently a resort community, with many residents settling in the area after retirement. Fort Frederica, now a national monument, was built by the British as protection from the Spanish; it is now one of the top historical attractions in the area.
There are many outstanding dining options on St. Simons Island. Bennie's Red Barn features some of the top steaks and chops in the area. Crabdaddy's Seafood Bar and Grill has a variety of freshly caught seafood that can be prepared a variety of ways. The Fourth of May features home-cooked vegetables, seafood specialties and excellent desserts. And if you get a chance, try the sumptuous Sunday brunch at the King and Prince Resort.
Golf options on St. Simons Island include Sea Palms, a 27-hole facility that winds through trees and around lagoons, and the King and Prince Golf Resort, which was restored by architect Billy Fuller in 2009 and features four exquisite holes on the small coastal marsh islands.
Sea Island is the gold-standard for resorts. The Cloister and The Lodge are both known for their exceptional quality and service and earn the high marks that have kept visitors coming back for years. Sea Island guests may enjoy the pool and private beach, as well as the spa or riding lessons. Golfers can't go wrong with either Seaside, the historic old links course that now hosts the PGA Tour's McGladrey Classic, and Plantation, a parkland-style course that features views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Several PGA Tour players live in the area (Davis Love III, Jonathan Byrd, Zach Johnson) and dozens comes to the Learning Center at Sea Island to take lessons from its cadre of nationally known instructors.
